Nanaimo, “Harbour City” Vancouver Island Real Estate.
Nanaimo is a lively port city that lies on Vancouver Island’s eastern coast, approximately 111 km north of Victoria, British Columbia’s capital city. It is approximately 55 Km to the west of Vancouver. The Strait of Georgia separates the island from the mainland. The city’s central location on Vancouver island makes for a straight forward commute south to Ladysmith, Duncan and Victoria, and also north to Parksville, the Comox Valley and Courtenay. Cowichan and the Carmanah valley lie to the west. Naniamo has been called the “Hub city” due to being a gateway not only to Vancouver island locations but also to the nearby Gulf Islands like Valdes, Gabriola, Galiano, Salt Spring and Protection. The Departure Bay ferry terminal, which is within the city, runs many regular sailings to the Lower Mainland on a daily basis.
Among the many reasons to consider Nanaimo as a great place to work, to live and to establish and operate a wide variety of businesses is the strong people oriented community spirit: With its vibrant arts, music, poetry and entertainment sector there are numerous events throughout the year (see the list below!) that attract locals and visitors alike. The ‘Old City Quarter’ is worth checking out for its specialty and boutique shops, spa and acupuncture services and delightful cafes.
The town takes pride in its heritage: The Bastion, a 1853 wooden canon tower, is accessed via the Harbour front walkway. Just to the south of the city, the Morden coal mine has its very own heritage preservation society. It was an early enterprise which employed many folks helped shaped Nanaimo. This founding industry was eventually replaced by forestry and now the tech sector is growing rapidly.
Enjoy the many amenities of the downtown core, go on an heritage walk or bike tour, hike the scenic trail systems that wind through the surrounding natural landscape, Check out nearby Newcastle island with its great trails and marine provincial park. It’s not surprising that property on the market in Nanaimo sells quickly!
